LIFE on the BOG
The bees are coming…

Because of their unique, bell-shaped flowers, cranberry and blueberry plants thrive when pollinated by a special method called buzz pollination, or floral sonication.
Bumblebees are especially good at this technique. Buzz pollinators grab on to the specialized pollen-bearing parts on the cranberry flower called the poricidal anther and then vibrate their muscles at the right frequency while holding on for dear life. This process will literally buzz the pollen out of the flower, over the bee’s body, and onto the pollen-collecting structures on their hind legs called corbicula.
Check out this buzz pollination video from Koppert, a provider of bumblebees to the cranberry and blueberry industries. And while we always encourage caution while walking around the cranberry bogs, it’s especially important at this time of year.
