LIFE on the BOG
Make cranberries the star of your Thanksgiving table
You can certainly serve your cranberry sauce on a platter, with the can rings clearly visible, if that’s your tradition. But if you’re looking for something a little different, here are some suggestions:
Use whole fresh berries, available now in your grocery store. Simmer the bag with a cup of water and a cup of white sugar until the berries pop (about 20 minutes) and the sauce thickens. Serve chilled.
Gussy up the basic whole berry recipe by replacing the water with orange juice, and maybe a splash of cointreau.
Make it your own by adding a quarter cup of diced candied ginger, a dash of cinnamon, or grated orange peel.
Or add it to the dessert table! Back in 1939, Ocean Spray suggested making parfaits with alternating layers of tapioca pudding and cranberry sauce. Today, they’re offering up a recipe for Cranberry Oatmeal Chocolate Chunk Cookies.
And while anyone can make a Cape Codder by blending vodka and cranberry juice, you can wow your guests with a Cranberry Rum Mimosa, mixing equal parts cranberry juice and coconut flavored rum, and champagne to taste. Garnish with an orange peel and few fresh cranberries.
Happy Thanksgiving!
